How to Help

Become part of The Samuel Generation

How can you help?

Nelson Mandela said: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”.

Donate your time, your skills, your money, your sporting abilities (humble or great), and through the sweat and tears, come and lay footprints with us for Sam. Each footprint is an imprint of change in these precious lives. We encourage donors and suppliers to choose an initiative that speaks to their hearts and to consider allocating their financial contributions or time to a selected initiative.

Volunteer & Skills

What are you good at? What are you qualified as? Give of your time pro bono: Lawyers, doctors, paediatric nurses, psychologists, allied professionals, counsellors etc.

Your time is very valuable and in the future, we are hoping to work on “cuddle & play programmes” for children whose parents cannot be by their sides as they face the scary road of being “alone” in hospital without a loved one. It is our dream that no child should ever be sick alone or worse die alone. You don’t need to have any particular professional skill to help spread Sam’s footprints. All you need is an honest and caring heart and be ready and willing to spend time with children in hospital, or offer your professional skills by running a support group, giving legal advice, etc.

**All volunteers first need to be checked and cleared against all registers that may affect your ability to work safely with children.

Inviting one and all

We invite runners, walkers and cyclists or any other form of sport enthusiast to “sweat” for Sam. We have sport packs that you can buy which include a branded technical shirt and a Sam bracelet. This allows individuals to raise awareness and fundraise for Footprints 4 Sam at sporting events or when you are leisurely strolling the neighbourhood.

Be sure to join the #F4SAMWGS Movement and check out our Footprints 4 Sam World Giving Series. Funds raised through these challenges go towards renovating essential paediatric spaces in government hospitals.

The Samuel Generation of Healthcare
Make a commitment

Commit to the values of the Samuel Generation of Healthcare as a healthcare professional:

  • Remember the human.
  • Remember the child.
  • Remember the family.
  • Remember to treat the whole person – mind, body and soul - with excellence and real empathy.
  • Quality of life – let a child be a child, even if tied to machines in an ICU setting. Create a child and family-friendly environment.
  • Remember hospital is not a long-term solution – home is where the heart is.
  • Love, play, cuddles and laughter – key ingredients for successful chronic care.
  • Remember to care for yourself.
  • Burnout and compassion fatigue – be an early-warning mirror for your colleagues.
  • Debrief regularly.
  • Allow yourself to grieve.
  • No man is an island – work as an integrated team (a relay of excellence).
  • Let Sam's life lessons be your professional compass.

Order and wear your Sam bracelet as a reminder, in healthcare and in life, to be loving and be kind. Help us change healthcare for the better. Each one of you is a ripple in the water. Each ripple touches hundreds of lives and hundreds of hearts. Let’s Sam’s legacy create a tidal wave of change so that South African Paediatric Healthcare becomes a beacon of excellence and hope to the world.

Aim: To build the biggest Virtual Charity Challenge Series in South Africa and internationally - Establishing a worldwide footprint and donor base supporting our key initiatives and key values.

Motivation: Due to the Covid_19 crisis Footprints 4 Sam is having to be innovative in terms of long-term fundraising planning given the cancellation of our key face to face fundraising events.

Goal: To have a Virtual Race every 3 months. Each challenge has a duration of 3 months, so Footprints 4 Sam will have #samsweaters on the road each day of the year.

Calling all Sponsors: Come and secure your sporting challenge with Footprints 4 Sam and show that you have a brand that cares, saving lives one exercise and footprint at a time!

Benefit: You get to inspire your community of colleagues, clients and suppliers and you get to make a difference! This year funds raised through these sporting challenges are going towards our Beautiful Memories Initiative where we are raising funds to renovate key paediatric spaces in government hospitals. What could be more meaningful?

Future Plans

Alongside our key initiatives, our future initiatives are aimed at raising awareness, funds and leaving lasting footprints in the lives of children with life-limiting illness.

The War on Super Bugs
Future Plans

Sam died from sepsis. Having been in hospital his entire life, Sam was exposed to nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections and he was colonised with three life-threatening super bugs: Klebsiella, Burkholderia, and Pseudomonas. It is our firm belief that Sam could well have been alive today if his treatment plan had been different and he had not spent 15.5 months in ICU. Sam was exposed to these killer bugs and the antibiotics to kill them his entire life - Sam was indeed a ticking time bomb.

Increasing worldwide pressure is coming to bear on hospitals to raise awareness (for example, through notification posters on the walls for the patients and staff to see) in order to ensure that all patients and families are fully informed. It is our wish to see this become a firm policy in South Africa too.

We would also like to see the public, families and health professionals informed and reminded about sepsis and the danger thereof, so they too can recognise the symptoms and react and treat or seek help accordingly.

Would you be one of our sponsors to help us realise this future plan? Contact us today for more details.
